Capital Market Awards 2021 honours excellence in investment:

Tuesday (June 22) hosted the eighth edition of the CFA Capital Market Awards, organized by the CFA Society of Sri Lanka. This year the ceremony took place virtually under the theme “Investing with a purpose”.

Speaking during the speech, CFA President Dinesh Warusavitharana, CFA Association, CFA, said that the CFA Capital Market Awards recognize the commitment to industry excellence and the best practices of market participants to improve market capitalization. The awards were presented in the five categories Best Brokerage Research Team, Best Stock Research Report, Best Trading Report, Best Investor Ratio, and Best Unit Trust Fund, with Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in each category.

Capital Alliance Securities received the gold award for the best brokerage research team, while Capital Alliance Securities received the highest score in the title of Best Trading Index and the Softlogic Brokers Gold Award for Best Brokerage Report. Meanwhile, Sunshine Holdings has brought gold to the top investment indices and the JB Vantage Value Equity Fund as the best mutual fund.

As the best price for the broker research team, Asia Securities receives the silver prize while CT CLSA Securities receives the bronze prize. In the Best Equity Research Report category, Capital Alliance Securities received the silver award, while the bronze trophy was not awarded this time. In the Investor Relations Award, NDB Bank won silver, while Dialog Axiata took bronze. Sending Money Market Fund and National Equity Fund won silver and bronze awards in the Best Unit Trust Fund category, respectively. Only the gold award went to the Best Sectoral Report Award.

Reviewers also praised industry participants for supporting best practices and uninterrupted customer service despite a challenging environment under pandemic conditions and highlighted the steps taken to use virtual platforms and technologies to interact with their customers. In addition, the panel recommended taking further steps to improve the quality and timeliness of research and reporting and to include ESG issues in Equity Research.

This year’s talk was delivered by Benjamin Yeoh, CFA, Senior Global Equity Portfolio Manager at RBC Global Asset Management, who addressed the issue of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG), particularly in the context of the sector’s capital management. and the value it provides to investors and society at large.

Following the speech, a roundtable was held with Kapila Hettihamu, Director of Commercial Banking Risk at Ceylon PLC, and Sid Amalean, Director of Sustainability at MAS Holdings, moderated by Senior Director Acuity Knowledge Partners and Global Investment Research Director Chanakya Dissanayake.

The discussion highlights the progress made by global banks in adopting best practices for ESG lending, as well as the requirements for Authorized Commercial Banks (PCBs) for lending in Sri Lanka. Sid Amalean also discussed the environmental, social, and management challenges faced by supply chain companies in the global apparel industry, and the importance of integrating sustainability into their business model to align with customers’ ESG goals.
