Digital assets such as cryptocurrencies have opened a whole new realm in the financial services industry, with financial intermediaries seeking ways to engage with investors’ holdings of those assets. In addition, fintech-derived solutions have helped reimagine the relationship between financial services firms and tech-savvy consumers.
While firms continue to try adapting to a more digitally-oriented marketplace, newer players are looking to disrupt the status quo in market structure, addressing both the inefficiencies of the settlement system and payment transfers, as well as the custody conundrum of exactly “who owns what.” The center of that disruption is the blockchain, the decentralized database technology that has powered the roughly $1 trillion cryptocurrency market.
